Aligoté is a natural cross of Pinot × Gouais Blanc that appeared towards the end of the 18th century in the Saône valley in Burgundy (F). It is therefore a brother of Gamay, Chardonnay, Melon and other less well-known grape varieties. Its name derives from Gôt, an old synonym of Gouais Blanc, its formerly widespread father and now almost extinct. Aligoté is mainly planted in Côte d'Or and in Chablis in Burgundy, where it is also used to make kir. In Switzerland, it is mainly found in Geneva, where it produces wines with refreshing natural acidity.

A color mutation of Pinot Noir that appeared independently in several places, Pinot Blanc was first mentioned in 1868 in Burgundy (F) where it has long been confused with Chardonnay. In Switzerland, this grape variety was introduced in the 1970s. It produces powerful wines, with moderate acidity, prized by gastronomy.
