An artificial cross of Blaufränkisch × Sankt Laurent created at the Klosterneuburg research center near Vienna in Austria in 1922, the Zweigelt was named after its breeder Fritz Zweigelt. A relatively early variety, sensitive to powdery mildew and very productive, Zweigelt is not widely cultivated in Switzerland.
